5 Reasons Local Businesses Lose Customers on Google (And How to Fix Each One)

Most local businesses aren’t losing to better competitors. They’re losing to competitors with fewer Google problems. After auditing dozens of Vancouver businesses, the same five issues come up again and again.

1. Wrong or missing Google Business Profile categories

Your primary category is the strongest signal you send Google about what you do. Pick “Contractor” when you should pick “Kitchen Remodeler” and you’ll lose to every business that got it right.

Fix: Set the most specific primary category that matches your core service, then add every relevant secondary category.

2. Inconsistent name, address and phone data

If your address reads “E 16th Ave” on your site, “East 16th Avenue” on Yelp and an old address on a directory you forgot exists, Google’s confidence in your listing drops, and so do your rankings.

Fix: Pick one canonical format, then audit and correct every citation.

3. A slow, thin website

Google confirms what your business does by reading your website. One vague “Services” page can’t support rankings for five different services, and a slow site loses mobile visitors before it loads.

Fix: A dedicated page for every core service, and a performance budget that keeps load under two seconds on mobile.

4. Review starvation

Reviews influence rankings and, more importantly, clicks. A 4.9 rating with 12 reviews loses to a 4.7 with 200, because volume and recency signal an active, trusted business.

Fix: A systematic review request after every completed job. Automation makes this run without you thinking about it.

5. No local content

Businesses that publish nothing give Google nothing to rank. Neighbourhood pages, project write-ups and answers to real customer questions all build the local relevance that generic sites lack.

Fix: One useful, locally-specific piece per month beats a burst of ten followed by silence.
